Meet The Dentist
Michael J Engel, DMD
Dr. Michael J. Engel was born and raised in Charleston and attended the University of South Carolina for his BS in Biology. He earned his Masters in Education from the Citadel while working at his family’s furniture store, and later graduated the Medical University of South Carolina with his DMD in 1979. Dr. Engel has a beautiful wife and two daughters, loves to go fishing in his free time and enjoys living in the Lowcountry. He volunteers at a local dental outreach clinic and is an involved member of his synagogue. Dr. Engel also serves as an adjunct professor in the restorative clinic with undergraduates at MUSC teaching Laser Dentistry.
Dr. Engel is very passionate about dentistry and wants to help patients overcome their fears of the dentist. Over the last 10 years Dr. Engel has used the Waterlase, which is a laser that can be used on hard or soft tissue. In using the laser, Dr. Engel is able to replace the use of a drill and eliminates having to get a patient numb.
Dr. Engel is the 1st dentist in South Carolina to become certified to treat Olympic athletes. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Sports Dentistry and served on the Board of Directors from 2004-2007 and as the General Chairman of the Annual Symposium in 2007. Additionally, he is also a member of the Academy of General Dentistry.
Dr. Engel has been involved in treating most of the student athletes here in Charleston and volunteered as team dentist to the South Carolina Stingrays for 16 years. He has been the team dentist for the Charleston Southern Buccaneers for 20 years and has also been the treating dentist for the Charleston Riverdogs (SAL), the Charleston Battery (MSL), and the Lowcountry Lowgators (NBDL). He genuinely loves helping people improve their smiles! Dr. Engel would love to welcome you as a new patient to his practice.
